I've been binge-watching Modern Family lately. I watched it in the past, but I can't remember where I left off. It's mind-blowing that Season One was released 15 years ago. Time really does fly. As I watch, I've noticed some unfamiliar words and expressions. So, I'm writing a note here, hoping to improve my English skills.

 

Words/Expressions Meaning
snob a person who respects and likes only people who are of a high social class, and/or a person who has extremely high standards who is not satisfied by the things that ordinary people like:

    ex) C: He's snob. / M: No, I'm discerning. / C: Offical slogan for snobs. 
discerning ์•ˆ๋ชฉ์ด ์žˆ๋Š”. ์ข‹์€ ํŒ๋‹จ๋ ฅ์„ ๋ณด์—ฌ์ฃผ๋Š”. (ํŠนํžˆ ์Šคํƒ€์ผ๊ณผ ํ’ˆ์งˆ์— ์žˆ์–ด์„œ.) 
showing good judgment, especially about style and quality:
ex) A discerning customer. 
walk on eggshells
(around someone)

to be very careful about what you say or do to someone because they are easily upset or offended.
ex) We've been married for more than 10 years, and you still walk on eggshells around my father.

loopy strange, unusual, or silly:
ex) He's a little loopy. (ํด๋ ˆ์–ด๋ž‘ ํ•„์ด ๋ฃจํฌ์— ๋Œ€ํ•ด ์ด์•ผ๊ธฐํ•˜๋Š” ์žฅ๋ฉด) 
run off leave a place or situation suddenly.
ex) He couldn't wait 10 minutes to run off. (๋ฃจํฌ๋ฅผ ๋ณด๋ฉด์„œ ํ•„์ด ์ด์•ผ๊ธฐํ•˜๋Š” ์žฅ๋ฉด) 
ex) You can't run off (home) now, just when I need you!
slumber =sleep. 
slumber party =sleepover.
a party where one or more people (usually girls) stay overnight at one person's house
dredge something up to talk about something bad or unpleasant that happened in the past:
ex) Mom, instead of dreding up the whole incident, maybe we should just try and repress it like a normal family. (๋ฏธ์ฒผ์ด ์—„๋งˆ๊ฐ€ ์ œ์ด/๊ธ€๋กœ๋ฆฌ์•„ ๊ฒฐํ˜ผ์‹์—์„œ ๋‚œ๋™๋ถ€๋ฆฐ๊ฑฐ์— ๋Œ€ํ•ด ์ด์•ผ๊ธฐํ•˜๋‹ˆ๊นŒ ๋ง๋ฆฌ๋ฉด์„œ ํ•˜๋Š” ๋ง.)

to hide a problem or try to keep it secret instead of dealing with it:
ex) After the scandal, the company tried to sweep it under the rug by quickly issuing a statement and avoiding any further discussion about it.
coddle ์• ์ง€์ค‘์ง€ํ•˜๋‹ค. (ํ”ํžˆ ๋ชป๋•…ํ•˜๊ฒŒ ์“ฐ์ž„) 
to treat with extreme or excessive care or kindness : pamper.
ex) Despite being in his thirties, his parents still coddle him, doing everything for him and shielding him from any responsibilities or challenges
ex) "Do I coddle Lily more than any other loving parents? It's possible." (์บ ์ด ๋ฆด๋ฆฌ๋ฅผ ๋„˜๋‚˜ ์• ์ง€์ค‘์ง€ํ•ด์„œ...)

ex) After losing her job and facing eviction, her financial situation was hanging by a thread, relying solely on the hope of finding a new job soon.
over-the-top  ์ง€๋‚˜์นœ ๊ฒƒ. 
You describe something as over the top when you think that it is exaggerated, and therefore unacceptable.
too extreme and not suitable, or demanding too much attention or effort, especially in an uncontrolled way:
ex) I think it's a little over-the-top. ์ด๊ฑฐ ๋„ˆ๋ฌด ์ง€๋‚˜์นœ ๊ฒƒ ๊ฐ™์•„. 
ex) Her extravagant birthday party was way over the top, with live music, gourmet catering, and a fireworks display.
loosen up  (์šด๋™์„ ํ•˜๊ธฐ ์ „๊ณผ ๊ฐ™์€ ๊ฒฝ์šฐ์—) ๋ชธ[๊ทผ์œก/~ ๋ถ€์œ„]์„ ํ’€์–ด ์ฃผ๋‹ค --> ๊ธด์žฅ์„ ํ’€๋‹ค.
to prepare your muscles for a physical activity by stretching and doing simple exercises: 
ex) After a stressful week at work, she decided to loosen up and unwind by spending the weekend at the beach with friends. 
ex) Loosen up and have fun.

(of an organization) without anyone in control and therefore unable to take decisions 
dodge a bullet (informal) ์ด์•Œ์„ ํ”ผํ•˜๋‹ค --> ์œ„ํ—˜ํ•˜๊ฑฐ๋‚˜ ๋ถ€์ •์ ์ธ ๊ฒƒ์„ ํ”ผํ•œ ๊ฒƒ. 
(informal) to narrowly avoid an undesirable situation, such as injury, disaster, or misfortune. 

flamboyant ์—„์ฒญ ์ž์‹ ๊ฐ ๋„˜์น˜๊ณ  ์ฃผ๋ชฉ๋ฐ›๋Š”๊ฑธ ์ข‹์•„ํ•˜๋Š”. 
very confident in your behavior, and liking to be noticed by other people, for example because of the way you dress, talk, etc.
