VAT 별도라고 미리 기재된 게 아닌 이상 거의 모든 품목에 세금이 포함되어 있는 한국과 달리, 미국에는 세금이 별도로 부과되는 경우가 많다. 예를 들어 $1.99 라고 해서 샀는데, 내가 실제로 지불하는 금액은 그것보다 많을 수 있다는 거다. (주마다 세율이 조금씩 다르다.)  가계부를 쓰다가 영수증을 보다 보면 어떤 경우에는 세금이 아예 부과되지 않은 경우도 있고, 어떤 경우에는 생각보다 많이 부과된 경우도 있어서 항상 궁금했는데, 처음에 캔/플라스틱 음료를 사면 택스가 한 번 더 부과되는 걸 알았을 때 신기했다. 또, 현지인분에게 '미시간은 Sales tax가 6%인데, 보통 식료품에는 부과되지 않는다. 대신, 조리가 된 음식을 사는거라면 택스가 붙는다.'라는 말을 들었다. 무슨 세금들이 있는지, ..

미국에 와서 신기했던 건 내가 아는 식재료가 한국과 맛이 다르다는 것과 또 품종(variety)이 매우 다양하다는 것이었다. 양파만 해도 한국에서는 해봤자 '햇양파', '양파', '적양파' 정도로만 알면 됐는데 여기는 Yellow onion, White onion 등 다양했고 감자는 또 Russet potato라는데 이건 뭔지... 순전히 내가 기억하고 써먹기 위해 간략하게 정리해본다.   양파 종류용도Sweet Onion 카라멜라이즈해서 쓰거나, 구워서(roast) 쓰는 곳에 쓴다. 순하고 부드럽고 달다. Yellow Onion범용적으로 쓸 수 있다. 수프나 스튜에 쓰기 좋다. 요리하면 달콤하고 부드러워진다. White Onion피클로 만들거나, 살사(Salsa)에 생으로 쓰거나, 볶음류에 사용한다. ..
