<2021.01.23 (Sat)> -  Debating the Usefulness of Facebook 

see the point of [sth] : (~하는) 이유/중요성/의미/요점 등이 있다고 생각하다.  

 : 주로 'I can't/don't see the point of [sth]'과 같이 쓰여서 'sth을 하는 이유, sth의 중요성/의미/요점을 모르겠다.'는 의미를 지닌다.

 : To understand or appreciate the meaning, reason, or importance of something.

 ex) I just don't see the point of another year in high school when I know I can go find work now!

 ex) I can't see the point of doing social media.

 

travel = go traveling = go on a trip = be on a trip

go on a trip : trip은 무조건 'on a trip' 형태로만 쓴다!!
 ex) He goes on business trips three times a year. 

 ex) When I travel 

      When I go traveling

      When I go on a trip 

 ex) David is on a business trip right now.

      I go on business trips three times a year. 

 

loads of (영국식) = a load of = a lot of = 많은  

stay in touch with = keep in touch with  

 

I went there four times a year : 매년 거기에 4번 간다. 

I went there four times that year : 그 해에 거기에 4번 갔다.

<2021.01.21 (Thu)> - Discussing the Morality of Eating Animals 

squeamish (adjective) : 비위가 약한 

 : easily made to feel sick/disgusted. 

 : easily upset or shocked by things that you find unpleasant or that you do not approve of 

 ex) I'm quite squeamish so I can't watch anything with too much blood or gore. 

 ex) She's really squeamish and can't stnad the sight of blood. 

 ex) I'm so squeamish so I can't watch horror movies. 

 ex) I am bad with horror movies. I'm squeamish. 

 ex) I'm sensitive to scary movies. I get teased for being squeamish from my friends. 

 

To be downtrodden : 탄압받은, 짓밟힌 

 : oppressed or treated badly by people in power. 

 ex) Most of the characters ini that TV show are poor and downtrodden. 

 ex) Many poor people feel downtrodden.  

 

To have a sweet tooth : 단 것을 좋아하다

 : you love sweet things. 

 ex) I have a sweet tooth 

 

Inadvertently 

 : = accidentally 

 ex) She's inadvertently in ketosis. It wasn't her plan.

advertent : 주의 깊은. 용의주도한. 

 : giving attention : heedful.

 ex) Since war can hardly be an option, could there be a congruence of sorts here – advertent or otherwise –  to work out a better working arrangement on the border? (출처 : THE WIRE

 

A quandary 

 : a problem with no claer solution/cannot be solved.

 : a state of perplexity or uncertainty over what to do in a difficult situation.

 ex) Japan is in a familiar quandary about how to provide military support without damaging its pacifist constitution.

 ex) We were talking the other day about moral quandaries and which animals we eat. How we assign so much cultural significance to certain animals.

To turn one's nose up at [sth] 

 : to refuse to take or accept something because it is not good enough

 ex) They turned their noses up at the only hotel that was available.

be hyped / be hyped up 

 : 신나다 (슬랭) 

 : If someone is hyped up about something, they are very excited or anxious about it. [informal]  

 ex) We are both so hyped up about buying the house. 

 ex) 5 reasons to get hyped about Netflix's fantasy series 'Sweet Home' 

 ex) I'm really hyped for this one. 

 ex) The Parasite created a lot of hype. 

 

All hell broke loose : 아수라장이 되다 

 : used to describe what happens when violent, destructive, and confused activity suddenly begins

amoral = immoral = 부도덕한. moral의 반대.

go down a rabbit hole

 : When you end up investigating something random on the internet and you end in a strange place. 

ex) Sometimes when I'm studying, I end up going down a rabbit hole and learning about things like strange murders.

 

pedestrian crossing

ex) Go over the road at the pedestrian crossing. 

 

A hub - 발음 주의! 허브(X) !(O) /hʌb/

ex) 고터 is a transport hub in Seoul 

 

quaint

 : a place that is historic, peaceful and beautiful 

ex) The temple in Bangkok are quaint. 

 

be conflicted about [sth] 

 : you are unsure of which option to take or what opinion to have.

ex) I'm conflicted about whether I should move to Jeju or not.
